Censor for a Day

Twice a year the Office runs a programme for schools called Censor for a Day. It takes place towards the end of the first term and the start of the fourth term. Each programme rotates between 4 regional locations. The Office can send speakers to schools unable to attend the Censor for a Day programme. To arrange for a speaker to come to your school please contact the Information Unit.

The proposed (but not confirmed) programme for the next two years is:

2009 3rd Term: Palmerston North, Wanganui, New Plymouth, Napier/Hastings, Wellington.

2010 1st Term: Christchurch, Dunedin, Wellington.

2010 3rd Term: Rotorua, Tauranga, Hamilton, Wellington.

The event takes senior high school students through the process of classifying a film. The Chief Censor gives a brief introduction to the Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Act 1993, then the students watch a pre-release film. Following a brief morning tea, students work through a modified consideration sheet, which mimics the process used by the Office to classify publications. The day finishes with a discussion and questions.

In Term 1 of 2009 Censor for a Day was held in Wellington and Auckland, where the students were shown the film Defiance.

You can read the results from the Term 1 Censor for a Day here (PDF, v7.0, 388kb).
